Faculty Bios
Shahrokh C. Bagheri, DMD, MD, FACS
Dr. Bagheri is the Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Northside Hospital of Atlanta, and serves as a clinical faculty at both the Medical College of Georgia and Emory University, where he is involved in resident education. He has published over 35 articles and 25 book chapters. Dr. Bagheri is an internationally recognized surgeon and is the senior editor and author of a major textbook, Clinical Review of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, which is a popular text for candidates preparing for the American Board examinations. A second book, co edited with Drs. Bell and Khan, Current Therapy in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, brings together some of the most renowned surgeons in the field and is due for publication in spring of 2011.
He received his DMD from Harvard University (cum laude, class marshall), and MD form Emory University, where he also completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery and internship in General surgery. He obtained his fellowship training in Cranio-Maxillofacial Trauma and Reconstruction. His particular interests include, implant surgery, facial cosmetic surgery, trauma, and reconstructive maxillofacial surgery. He is one of few surgeons in the United States that performs microneurosurgical repair of peripheral trigeminal nerve injuries with extensive publications on this topic. He is also a fellow of the prestigious American college of Surgeons (FACS).
Dr. Bagheri has lectures nationally and internationally on a variety of topics in facial surgery. He serves as editor of several peer reviewed surgical journals and has organized international lectureships for doctor education on many aspects of maxillofacial surgery. Robert A. Bays, DDS
Dr. Bays graduated from West Virginia University, School of Dentistry and completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1973. His academic affiliations include The University of Amsterdam, 1973-1976, University of North Carolina, 1976-1978, Medical College of Georgia, 1978-1986, and he served as Professor and Chairman of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Emory University, Atlanta from 1986- 2003.
He has been principle investigator on two major NIH research grants that studied orthognathic surgery. His primary contribution has been the development of principles and techniques that integrate basic temporomandibular function with the surgical correction of dentofacial deformities whether temporomandibular disorders are present or not.
He has published widely on the subjects of orthognathic surgery and temporomandibular disorders. Dr. Bays has served on the Advisory Committee of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Consultant for the American Dental Association, Commission on Dental Accreditation and President of the Georgia Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
R. Bryan Bell, MD, DDS, FACS
Educated in the European tradition of Cranio-maxillofacial surgery, Dr. Bell holds a dental degree from Creighton University and a medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency was completed at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and he subsequently completed specialized fellowships in head and neck oncologic surgery, as well as craniomaxillofacial trauma at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, Oregon.
Dr. Bell is currently Medical Director of the Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Program at Providence Cancer Center and Attending Head and Neck Surgeon and Director of OMFS Resident Education on the Trauma Service/Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, Oregon. He holds an academic appointment as Affiliate Associate Professor at Oregon Health & Science University, Affiliate Assistant Professor at the University of Washington, and maintains a private practice as a partner in Head and Neck Surgical Associates.
His clinical and research interests are focused upon head and neck oncologic surgery, cranio-maxillofacial trauma surgery, and orthognathic surgery. His work has been published in more than 70 peer-reviewed journal articles and textbook chapters.
Angelo Cuzalina, MD, DDS
Dr. Angelo Cuzalina was elected as the president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery for 2011. He began his post graduate education at Oklahoma State University, graduating with a degree in Physiology. He went on to obtain a Medical degree from the University of Alabama and a Dental Degree from Baylor. He completed an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency followed by a full body cosmetic surgery fellowship where his mentors were former presidents of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.
Dr. Cuzalina is board certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery in full body cosmetic surgery as well as the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. He has been in private practice, exclusive to Cosmetic Surgery, in Tulsa, Oklahoma since 1998. He has performed well over 10,000 cosmetic surgery procedures and runs an AAAHC accredited surgery center with full time anesthesia and nursing staff along with overnight courtesy guest suites. Dr. Cuzalina is the program director for an AACS Accredited Cosmetic Surgery Fellowship Program in full body and facial cosmetic surgery.
Dr. Cuzalina has authored numerous cosmetic surgery articles as well as book chapters. He is also a frequent guest lecturer for cosmetic surgery courses around the country and abroad. Dr. Cuzalina hosts and is program chairman for several AACS & ACCME accredited live cosmetic surgery workshops every year for surgeons around the world.
Eric J. Dierks, MD, DMD, FACS
Dr. Eric Dierks is a graduate in both medicine and dentistry from the University of Louisville. His residency in oral-maxillofacial surgery was done at the Medical Center of Delaware, and his residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery was completed at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas (Parkland Memorial Hospital).
He is board-certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and by the American Board of Otolaryngology. Dr. Dierks served on the medical school faculty of U.T. Southwestern in the Division of Head and Neck Surgery for five years, before moving to Portland, Oregon where he joined Dr. Bryce Potter to form the Head and Neck Surgical Associates. He founded the first Fellowship in Head & Neck Oncologic Surgery in the U.S. that was available to graduates of oral and maxillofacial surgery residency and has seen his former fellows go on to academic positions at institutions in North America and Europe.
Dr. Dierks has lectured and performed surgery internationally and has published over 100 papers and book chapters on a variety of topics related to his areas of surgical interest.
Raymond J. Fonseca, DMD
Dr. Fonseca is currently in private practice in Asheville, North Carolina. He received his D.M.D. degree from the University Of Connecticut School Of Dental Medicine in 1973 and completed an oral surgery residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas in 1976. He received his certification from the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1978.
Following his postgraduate training, he held the position of Assistant Professor and Director of Graduate Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1980, Dr. Fonseca joined the faculty of the University of Iowa as Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Education in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He was Chairman and Professor of Oral Medicine, Pathology and Surgery at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry from 1982 to 1989. From 1989 through 2003, Dr. Fonseca was the Dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He is presently a Clinical Professor of the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Fonseca has published 62 articles, 15 book chapters, 27 abstracts and 8 major books. He is the editor of the three-volume text Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery published in July 2008. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons awarded him the Outstanding Educator Award, the Distinguished Researcher Award and the Gies Award.
Khaled Ahmed Sabry Ghandour
Dr. Ghandour currently is a Consultant & Head of Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery Department of the Dubai Health Authority. He received a bachelor degree in dental surgery from the Cairo Dental School, Cairo University in 1984 and completed his fellowship in oral surgery, at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, United Kingdom in November 1988.
Dr. Ghandour has been a member of the dental examination board for the city of Dubai since 1990 and is a founding member of the Arab Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (1998). He specializes in facial deformities, maxillofacial trauma 1 ary and 2 ary correction and bone graft techniques and preprosthetic surgery.
Hossein Mortazavi MD, DMD , FICS
Dr. Hossein Mortazavi attended the University of Tehran and received his MDM in 1965. He then earned his MD at the University of Tehran in 1976. He began his career in General Surgery at the University of Tehran in 1975 and then completed an internship of OMFS at the University of Florida in 1977.
Dr. Mortazavi did his residency and chief residency at the University of Alabama in Birmingham from 1978 – 1980. In 1981, he founded the Department of Oral and Maxiollofiacial Surgery, National University of Tehran where he currently works.
He was President of the Iranian Society of OMFS from 2005 – 2009 as well as serving as the Chief Consultant of Iranian Ministry of Health. Dr. Mortazavi also was the Vice President of the Iranian Medical Council and served as an Executive Board Examiner for 18 years.
Dr. Mortazavi has published three books and 120 articles. He also has given over 25 International lectures.
Husain Ali Khan, DMD, MD
Dr. Khan grew up in Toronto, Canada. His undergraduate education began at the University of Toronto. He received his DMD degree from University of Kentucky School of Dentistry and received his Medical degree from University of Miami. His internship and residency in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery was completed at the University of Miami at Jackson Memorial Hospital. He also served residency in general surgery at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital. He is presently a Clinical associate Professor at the Medical College of Georgia in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Khan has been in private practice Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for the past 8 years and is currently taking a sabbatical from private practice, doing a Fellowship in General Cosmetic Surgery accredited by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. His Fellowship training is under Dr. Angelo Cuzalina, current President of the American Academy of Cosmetic surgery. His training is focused on Facial, Breast and Body Cosmetic Surgery. He is Co editor of the Text Book Current Treatments in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Khan’s hobbies include fitness, health and nutrition and drawing. He has run several full marathons. Dr. Khan and his wife Farnaz enjoy traveling with their daughter, Layla.
Robert E. Marx, DDS
Dr. Marx is Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and is well known as an educator, researcher, and innovative surgeon. He has pioneered new concepts and treatments for pathologies of the oral and maxillofacial area as well as new techniques in reconstructive surgery.
His many prestigious awards, including the Harry S. Archer Award, the William J. Giles Award, the Paul Bert Award, and the Donald B. Osbon Award, attest to his dedication and commitment to the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. His recent textbook “Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. A Rationale for Diagnosis and Treatment” has also won the American Medical Writers Associations Prestigious Book of the year Award and his most recent textbook “Platelet Rich Plasma: Dental and Craniofacial Applications” has just been released.
Mark R. Stevens, DDS
Dr. Stevens is Professor, and Chair, of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia. He received his DDS from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, and his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Certificate from Wilford Hall Medical Center.
He has held full time faculty appointments at the University of Miami, School of Medicine for 15 years serving as Assistant Chief, Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Miami, School of Medicine. Dr. Stevens has been at MCG since 2006 and he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology.
Dr. Stevens is a Board examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the author of more than 30 scientific articles, books and chapters.
